We created one set of these components for phones (iOS and Android), and adapted them to tablet sizes from there. Tablet components are largely the same as those for mobile, and on a technical level the code only needs to exist once in two different styles. With this system components can vary in their look and positioning, similarly to the way responsive design works for web. Designers can then design a screen once using common components, and it can be easily adapted to different screen sizes as well as to iOS and Android.


American Airlines is one of the world's largest airline by size, revenue, and the number of passengers carried. It is a founding member of Oneworld, the third largest airline alliance in the world with partners like British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair. The airline offers flights to 350 destinations in 50 countries around the world, averaging nearly 6,700 flights each day.

Instead of relying on individual atoms, we started considering our components as elements of a living organism. They have a function and personality, are defined by a set of properties, can co-exists with others and can evolve independently. A unified design language should not just be a set of static rules and individual atoms, but an evolving ecosystem.
Charlotte – American's second-largest hub in terms of number of destinations and daily flights.[14] It is American's primary hub for the Southeastern United States.[14] About 42 million passengers fly through CLT on American every year, or about 115,000 people per day.[14] American has about 91% of the market share at CLT, making it the airport's largest airline.[14]

Prior to beginning this design sprint, we had already created a basic style guide, that we called the foundation. This foundation loosely defined our typography, colors, icons, spacing and information architecture. The foundation proved essential for guiding our work in a unified direction while allowing room for us to individually explore creative design solutions. This way we felt that we were all working together, towards the same idea. Reviewing our collective work at the end of each day, we began to see patterns emerge. We course-corrected when necessary, and started defining our standardized components.

Philadelphia – The fourth-largest hub in terms of number of daily flights, fifth-largest in number of destinations and American's primary East Coast hub.[16] American flies approximately 20.5 million passengers a year through PHL, which is about 56,000 people per day.[16] American has about 70% of the market share at PHL, making it the airport's largest airline.[16] Philadelphia is American Airlines' primary European and transatlantic gateway.[16]

American Airlines allows passengers to choose their seats in most cases, but there are times when the seats will be assigned at check-in. The carrier may withhold some seats until the day of departure to best accommodate passengers. Economy Class passengers will enjoy a seat pitch of 30-32 inches, while Business and First Class passengers can relax comfortably with 38-40 inches of legroom or a lie-flat seat.

American Airlines' wastewater treatment plant recycles water used at the base to wash aircraft, process rinse water tanks, and irrigate landscape. That alone has saved almost $1 million since 2002. In addition to that, American Airlines has also won the award for the reduction of hazardous waste that saved them $229,000 after a $2,000 investment. A bar code system is used to track hazardous waste. It has led to reduction of waste by 50 percent since 2000.[80]
American Airlines baggage fees apply to specific itineraries and reflect the same policies as US Airways. The fees associated with checked bags are determined by the travel destinations, as some locations charge for all checked luggage, while others only charge for the second or additional checked baggage. Additionally, bags exceeding the size or weight guidelines may incur additional baggage fees.
